There’s nothing more frightening to parents than an emergency involving their child. The emergency department at Akron Children’s Hospital provides more than state-of-the-art trauma care. We provide state-of-the-art human care – for both children and parents.
As this region grows and the medical needs of our children become more complex, so must the ED grow and advance. Visits to our ER have increased from 44,000 when the department was built to almost 60,000 in 2012, overpowering our space and straining our resources.
The new ED has been designed to meet increased patient volumes and trauma requirements and will feature advanced diagnostic equipment.
The space has been created with input from patient families and frontline staff who understand the emotional and logistical needs of pediatric emergencies.
A behavioral health unit will also be included to manage the specialized needs of psychiatric and behavioral health patients, with a separate entrance, privacy rooms, calming colors, and immediate access to behavioral health specialists.
